What: This week is 'Book Week. It is to promote reading.

So What: This is a fantastic idea that engages the learner. Kids visualise characters and really get into novels, and story telling.

Now what: Each student then goes and performs a character they have chosen from their book, followed by quiz and activities.

Through engaging in Mathletics via digital technology, I have attained a level on Certificate, whereby Mathletics has endorsed me in using Mathletics in my class; using a range of different tasks and features of its programme effectively. Mathletics hosts webinars, that I have taken part of, which has expanded my knowledge of how to use this technology better. One of the most important aspects that learned was how to create groups, and then differentiate learning according to the curriculum level a student is on.

So much to Learn at Tongariro National Park Camp!

Yr8 Camp at Tongariro National Park involving 60 students. (see image). Engaging with local Iwi (Ngati Tuwharetoa) and their relationship with the land. Learning was made possible through students conversing with local DOC and tourism workers about their roles and the impact it has on the TNP. Roll Away The Rows

In the picture shown, this is about my third attempt this year to arrange the class in a away that would help students work well together and also when when assigned with individual activities. Discerning students who are likely to jell together and work cooperatively is a skill that is in the process of development. However, the physical classroom is like a working canvas. Quite often I roam other classes to see how other teachers like to arrange their rooms. What I have seen work well through class observations, is having space for small group work, and desk group space. Providing and area for small group work is extremely important as both teacher and student can be in a comfortable space without the feeling of being crammed in like tuna inside a can. This then can set the scene for engaging learning!
