PLD WITH NATHAN WALLIS NEUROSCIENCE

PB4L: Tear 1 school - relates to 80-100% of the school.
Nathan Karr - Brain development
90’s decade of learning more than the 300yrs before on the brain.
Menstrual cycle can be delayed if father is there. Biologically off set as woman doesn’t feel need to man etc.
1st 1000 days, intelligence is develop- the brain works out what it needs to be for life.
We can see variation within siblings- different experiences, - first born are often more brainer, and more successful. -in neroscince, your number 1 or your the other.
Use complex language to talk to babies, to get them adapt- they attach to the most responsive person (diad). - dad then supports the diad
Resilience growth factors: lean, music, family involvement, study after secondary school, stay at home in the first year (biggest factor)
If one starts resilience, so does the baby. If the mother isn’t resilience, so is the baby.

Staying still is harder work than letting them move. - we only really perfect this skill in our 20’s
Movement helps learning.

Growth development/maturity (speed): Gender, birth in the family.

The best advantages:
First one a boy
The second a girl.

First born girl could be fully mature at 18 by 23 she has been in adulthood for 5 years.

Frontal cortex important so mother doesn’t kill child. Male, less developed so he could go out and get food, less empathy for the thing he is killing.

Brain order- Bottom to top (Perry’s Neurosequenceial Model)

Don’t  try force children to walk, let them initiate the movement. If you try to move them early when there body isn’t ready to load there mass on their joints.

Wrapping babies isn’t that good as it possible that it provide freedom for the brain

Limbic (emotional response) - upto 2 they are highly embedded in this part of the brain. Only 3+ they start to develop the cortical (front part of the brain)

Trying to discipline them when are 2 won’t work as they don’t have the opportunity to tap into the Cortical part of the brain. Wait, but the strategy is move them onto the next task.
Tavtaki - one of the best researched curriculum,

Our nation is known for the highest suiside rate in the western world.

(improving the trasition, Peter gluckmen) - Government research
Findings- axiety if bought on my the emphasis on numeracy and literacy when they should be social interaction.

With bad kids, all they have had punishment. If that is all they have had, they learn nothing.

punishment  integrated once the child is develped. Don’t over use it.

Digital devices- OCED says - the amount of time a child under 2 on devices in 0 minutes.
  1. Of the lights on the eys
  2. Not developed.

The child upto 7yrs all he needs to know is that he is a good learner, confidence. Not, do you know this this and this. (we don’t need to always extend them, celebrate them)

Though the stimulating the child correctly, you build resilience. If they don’t have that, you have to go back to that i.e building resilience.

Metaphor - Rebel sports that is run down.

Two options -
  1. Leave the shop open and and work around things., can’t use certain tools at times.. Drags out how long it takes.
  2. Close the shop and get it done in two weeks.

Environmental factors:

Lots Limbic in the environment and less Cortex .. that child won’t progress as much.

The higher the quality of the relationship the better of the learning!

If the parent is absent the first 1,000 days, children go into survival mode. They are more likely to have depression anxiety etc.

They then become independent, which shuts off empathy and skills that connect with other people.

Lots of people have a continuation of thinking from the 1st 1000 days.

If parents are there. They are not in that survival mode. They think ‘oh I don’t have to worry, mum and dad have it covered’. They can go on and move forward.

From a 3yr old they are ready to have boundaries placed, before that is fruitless. Instead indulge them, there is not harm.

C - Caffine
A- Alcohole
T- Tabaco
S- Sugar

For Kids this is going to be social media etc.

Reduces, neuroplasticity, Dopamine (See above)
vs
Increases, neuroplasticity, Endorphins (See bellow)

Exercise
Singing

Brain 2

The evidence is that we should travel with them through education, there is no evidence that we should do it year by year with different teachers - relationship is number 1.

Current solutions: Form classteachers travel with them year by year. And we organise them into classes that they teach.  This brings in a dyatic relationship!

3rd Brain

You need to culturally recognise them to engage them emotionally

Reflection - Takeaways

We can reconnect the neuropath-ways (neuroplasticity) to the Cortical if they have not been developed
if they have not developed it well in the first 1,000 days.

Kids go into survival mode and can reduce reliance to learn.

Implimentation into practice

Connecting with students positively. Not only this, but triggering positive emotion via cultural responsiveness, understanding, empathy creating a form of dyatic relationship. This being the foundation which we them have a lead in to teach.
However, in my practice I want increase leaning by also letting them move more to encourage brain stimulation.
